In industrial applications where temperatures fluctuate rapidly, material fatigue is the greatest enemy. 321 SS (UNS S32100) has long been recognized as the "workhorse" for high-temperature service, offering a unique blend of stability and durability that standard grades like 304 cannot match.
The primary challenge of thermal cycling—repeated heating and cooling—is the risk of intergranular corrosion. 321 SS addresses this through the addition of Titanium (Ti).
Titanium has a higher affinity for carbon than chromium does. By forming titanium carbides, the alloy prevents the precipitation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries when exposed to temperatures in the sensitization range (427°C to 816°C). This stabilization ensures that the steel maintains its structural integrity and corrosion resistance even after hundreds of thermal cycles.
